In this “environmental waste map” created by Jessica Butler, one can easily see how plastic bags are just one of the evident factors of the huge wast problem that plastic carries. This map provides support to Hawkins argument that plastic public service announcements can “provoke judgment or guilt” (Hawkins 22). The map situates the audience in the driving seat of the waste problem, which successfully enhances feelings of objection and self-concious guilt. However, I found myself feeling bad for using more than just plastic bags, plastic bottles, and almost anything else made with plastic is named in Jessica Butler’s map of environmental waste. The article also discusses the bodily damage that plastic can inflict with regards to BPA poisoning. Overall, this map effectively made me feel horrible for my consumption of plastic.
